Yaas Clone Activities of IHBPRelief Work and Distribution of Cooked Food Undertaken by Institute for the Handicapped and Backward People during Super Cyclone Yass at Nityaberia, North 24 Parganas District, West Bengal.

We all are aware that Super Cyclone Yaas lashed South Bengal on 26th May 2021 and the most affected districts in the State of West Bengal were North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore and West Midnapore. Super Cyclone caused severe destruction to both lives and properties in the above mentioned districts. The people of the area lost their house, agricultural crops, salt water from sea also entered their field after breaking embankments making it unsuitable for agriculture in future. Many people are living under the sky in makeshift camps and some are practically living under open sky. The Super Cyclone Yaas was a double blow to the people of the area who were fighting against Covid – 19 since last year and current lockdown in the State.

In this grave situation, Institute for the Handicapped and Backward People made the decision of coming forward and standing by the people of the area and serve the needy and poor who are affected the most by cyclone Yaas.

We organized a Relief Camp and distribution of Cooked Food support to 3000 people directly affected by Super Cyclone Yaas at Nityaberia, Bholakhali, Chera Khali, Boro Sehera, Choto Sehera around Nityaberia, North 24 Parganas District, West Bengal. We were prompt and efficient in our service and made regular announcement of the Mike about our program of distribution of cooked food in the area. Our main objective was that no one stays on empty stomach. We had thought that we would distribute Dry Ration as relief but we found that the people of the area had no place to cook their food, nor have fire-woods for cooking.  Taking into consideration the plight and sorrow of the people of the affected area we started distributing cooked food to 3000 people from our Centre at Nityaberia from 25th of May 2021 a day prior of Cyclone Yaas hit the area till 5th June 2021. We had started distributing from one day before Yaas struck in the area because from that day people were moved away from their homes to camps and other shelter. We provided hygienic Cooked food comprising Rice, Dal, Soya Bean Curry among others thrice a day to 3000 people including, aged, pregnant women, differently able persons, new born babies and their mothers. To serve 3000 people three times in a day is no easy task and we congratulate our Cooks namely Abul Aziz Fakir, Mohammed Barik Fakir and Mohammed Sohrab Fakir who worked from 6 in the morning to 10 in the night to cook food for the affected people on 6 ovens which was lit up from the very morning to late at night.

We also started providing shelter and food to 200 people in our Centre from 25th of May 2021 a day prior of Cyclone Yaas hit the area till 5th June 2021. We had recruited 500 volunteers and formed a Youth Team for this Program and had gave them initial training about disaster management, relief work among others. The Volunteers worked sincerely and very hard to successfully implement the program.

On the last day of our program i.e. on 5th of June, people left for their homes to rebuilt the house and see what is left. At the time of departure we gave the 200 people who had taken shelter in our centre dry ration comprising Rice, Pulses, Potato, to cook and feed themselves for some days. The people of the area sincerely thanked our Organization for our initiative and coming to their rescue, standing beside them and serve them in this dark and destructive period. Our Organization is always committed to stand by vulnerable people in their time of need.
