The Institute for the Handicapped and Backward People (IHBP) is a socially responsible organisation, non-profit making NGO working for the total upliftment and development of the needy poor differently able and backward people of the society. "IHBP" is working in this field since "2001". IHBP is also involved in many social projects in the state of West Bengal, India.

The Institute operates some Non-Formal School and for the last 14 years has been running a Special School for the disabled children. We are providing education and training to Hearing Impaired, Mentally Challenged, Cerebral Palsy and vulnerable children of the age group of 1-18. We also provide various therapeutic activities through regular classes and integrating our students with special needs into mainstream schools.

The Institute also runs some vocational training centers and workshop at the centre viz. computer, tailoring etc, where women, parents are also trained along with Persons with Disabilities since the year 2001. The Institute also has a Unit for employment and rehabilitation of the poor women with disabilities.

BACKGROUND OF THE ORGANIZATION

Institute for the Handicapped and Backward People (IHBP) was founded as a registered society in the year 2000 by Dr. M. A. Hasan Sahani, a freelance Social Worker by desire, with the passion to help by education, training, rehabilitation and serve the deprived disabled and the disadvantaged People of his native area. Later the Services of the organisation were gradually extended to nearby Villages, on the basis of need.

INSPIRATION OF THE ORGANISATION

Dr. M. A. Hasan Sahani is the key competence of the governing body and dedicated social worker he is the founder of this organization and it’s established by 2001. He and seventeen members of his family i.e. Father’, Mother’ Sisters and Brothers all numbering 17 (seventeen) in the family are disabled. Inspiration created at their with a  mission is to  bring about positive changes in the lives of all people with disabilities, children, women, old age and backward people through a range of well thought services to enhance their sustainable skills and knowledge and give them opportunities to exercise their constitutional rights and their full participation and contribution to the community.

 

NATURE OF THE ORGANISATION

This is a non-governmental, non-profitable & non-political, Philanthropic and state level organization.  Specially, we are promoting humanitarians service for care, education, training and rehabilitation and Research of the disabilities, orphan children, destitute, women and senior citizen who are helpless.

 

THE TARGET AREAS AND GROUP

Institute for the Handicapped and Backward People (IHBP) is now effective in 29 Block, under the South 24 Parganas and Kolkata district of the state of West Bengal, India. The key target groups are Backward classes, SC, ST, Muslim children and among them girls and Children with disability. Non discriminatory access to Basic Services (Education, Health and Nutrition, training and rehabilitation) of Socially Excluded Communities Dalits (the so-called untouchables or lowest caste group), Children, Child Laborers, the disadvantaged Youths, rural Women and the unorganized rural Laborers.

 

ORGANISATION’S ACTIVITIES

Institute for the Handicapped and Backward People (IHBP) is doing work since the year 2001 in the field of disability. We are providing education with Special School for hearing Impaired, Mentally challenged, Cerebral Palsy, Visually Impaired and vulnerable children age group1-18. We also provided Community Based Rehabilitation and training centre and workshop for the adult disabled boys, girls and women absolutely free of cost and 99 % of disabled those who having come from the very poorest of poor families in urban and rural areas, at present 202 disabled children both girls and boys are constantly benefited from us. Besides of this we conducting Special education, non-formal Education for working Children, in the evenings, Promoting Education among the Village Children and Youths, Strengthening of Parents and Teachers in the Villages to bring down the School drop-outs, disabled accessible ramp, Providing additional teaching Staff to community schools, Organizing Health and Human Rights Awareness and Education, Alternative Skill Training for Child Laborers, Training for rural Girls with disability, and organizing Women with disability into Self Help Groups (SHGs). We run some vocational training centers and workshop at the centre viz. computer, Embroidery, tailoring, Manpower development and also operate a dental health unit, where mothers’ parents are also involved for training along with Persons with Disabilities since the year 2001. We are running unit for employment and rehabilitation of poor women and those with disabilities.

Institute for the Handicapped & Backward People, is to bring about positive changes in the lives of vulnerable people such as disabled, children, women, old aged and backward people through a range of well thought services to enhance their sustainable skills and knowledge and give them opportunities to exercise their constitutional rights and their full participation and contribution to the community of the society.

 

VISION OF THE ORGANISATION

Our organization realizes that in all development process, Disabled, children and women’s participation must be ensured and community involvement and active participation is essential for sustainability of the programmes and balanced development. Institute for the Handicapped and Backward People invests in the potentials of these individuals through community development initiatives targeting Food Security, Economic Development, Primary Health and Basic Education, Emergency management initiatives and provide aid to disaster survivors.
